🚀 Builders&Sellers - Setting fire to your ships, Ada on the README podcast and more...
Should you set fire to your ships?
Not quite.
The phrase "to burn one's ships" is a metaphor that originated from a story about General Xiang Yu of the third century B.C. He sent his army to take on the Qin Dynasty. While they slept, he ordered all the ships to be set alight so as to remove the option of retreat. In the sixteenth century, Spanish conquistador Cortes employed the same motivational technique.
Xiang Yu and Cortes are exceptions. An exit strategy is always a smart move, especially in business.
Instead of literally setting fire to your ships, you can skip to the application of the ideas of commitment and determination to your startup.
Starting a business can be a challenging and risky venture, and it is important to stay committed to your goals and not give up when faced with obstacles. One way to apply this metaphor to your startup is to make a conscious decision to commit fully to your business and not consider backing out or giving up, even when faced with challenges. This can help motivate you and your team to work hard and persevere in order to achieve your goals. Additionally, it can help prevent you from making decisions that are based on fear or uncertainty and instead focus on the long-term success of your business.
